This direct-care role is based in the Beacon Award-winning General Intensive Care Unit at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a 525-bed tertiary care facility and the only Level I Adult Trauma Center in the Hampton Roads region. The 16-bed inpatient unit sits within a Magnet-recognized hospital that also houses a dedicated burn trauma unit and serves as the primary teaching site for Eastern Virginia Medical School.

What You'll Do

  • Assess and admit patients who require intensive monitoring and intervention
  • Perform ongoing rounding and continuous clinical surveillance
  • Administer medications and manage complex pharmacologic regimens
  • Communicate clinical updates and coordinate care with patients’ families
  • Maintain accountability for the plan of care for assigned critically ill adults

Nurses serve as primary caregivers, integrating assessment findings into real-time decisions while collaborating with a high-functioning interdisciplinary team.

Clinical Environment & Patient Population

The GICU manages adults whose conditions demand continuous assessment, rapid intervention, and advanced critical-care monitoring. Nurses care for patients with acute cardiac events, life-threatening dysrhythmias, respiratory failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, complex postoperative complications, and selected high-risk obstetric cases.

Critical Care Response & Teamwork

GICU nurses have the opportunity to participate in the hospital’s Medical Response Team and Code Blue Team, expanding their role beyond the unit to hospital-wide emergencies.

Licensure

Compensation & Benefits
