Professional Context of Hospice Nursing in a Field Setting

Hospice registered nurses who practice in the field occupy a distinct professional space within nursing. Rather than working inside a structured hospital unit, they bring clinical assessment, symptom management, and care coordination into the private environments where patients spend their final weeks or months. This requires the ability to evaluate changing physical and emotional needs with limited immediate backup, to communicate sensitively with families facing difficult decisions, and to keep the documented plan of care aligned with the patient’s expressed goals. The work integrates nursing judgment with the contributions of physicians, social workers, chaplains, and aides, forming a continuous circle of support that follows the patient across home and facility settings. For nurses drawn to end-of-life care, the field-based hospice model offers a practice environment defined by continuity, relational depth, and clinical responsibility outside traditional institutional walls.
