Responsibilities

  • Collect and analyze patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatments; adjust the treatment plan as needed and notify the team leader, charge nurse, supervisor, or physician.
  • Direct and provide all aspects of safe, effective hemodialysis therapy for assigned patients in collaboration with direct and ancillary staff.
  • Administer medications as prescribed or according to approved algorithms and document medical justification and effectiveness.
  • Assess and document basic learning needs of patients and families and deliver initial and ongoing education.
  • Update nursing assessments and plans of care through collaboration with the interdisciplinary team and ensure awareness of transplant and treatment modality options.
  • Initiate or assist with emergency response measures and ensure correct laboratory collection, processing, and shipping.

Work is performed under the direction of the supervisor with guidance from a clinical educator, preceptor, or other registered nurses. The role may include serving as a resource for staff training and orientation once qualified.
